Our Approach to Teaching Writing
At St Catharine’s, we believe every child is a writer. Our curriculum equips pupils with a powerful set of skills, balancing the mechanics of transcription with the art of composition. We empower children to write as unique and independent writers to the best of their ability, embracing a step-by-step approach to build up those skills to their full potential.
Through the ‘I’m a Clever Writer’ approach, we provide a consistent and streamlined journey from oral language to independent fluency. Our curriculum is built on a rich diet of high-quality texts and experiences, ensuring children have a meaningful purpose and the academic vocabulary to succeed. By systematically revisiting key genres—from narrative to persuasion—we ensure every child develops a sophisticated voice and the confidence to communicate effectively across all disciplines.
Our Core Aim for all Pupils
Our children are presented with a precise, skills-led curriculum. Starting with early mark-making in EYFS, pupils progress through high-impact units that move from explicit modelling to an independent ‘Star Write.’
New skills are introduced only when prior learning is secure. Each piece of work helps build upon those skills learnt previously. Alongside ‘non-negotiable’ reminders and WAGOLL’s (What A Good One Looks Like), children are able to see high quality examples of work to support the children’s independent work. Through dynamic Working Walls, checklists, and meaningful cross-curricular links, we provide children with the vocabulary and technical tools needed to write with purpose, fluency, and confidence.
Handwriting
We prioritise foundation skills such as transcription fluency to ensure all pupils develop a legible, joined style by the end of Year 3. Using Little Wandle formation phrases in EYFS and KS1, teachers model high expectations across all displays and books. Misconceptions are addressed instantly, ensuring handwriting becomes a fluent, automatic skill that is proudly showcased in every ‘Star Write.’
Spelling
Our curriculum provides a seamless transition from Little Wandle phonics to the Magic Spell programme. Through a combination of explicit instruction, dictation, and live marking, we secure technical accuracy across all key stages. Targeted support ensures every child builds the confidence to spell with precision, allowing their voice to shine in their final ‘Star Write’ compositions.
