Art Vision 2025 – 2026

Our Approach to Teaching Art and Design

At St Catharine’s School, Art and Design is taught with the clear intention of nurturing children as creative individuals within a supportive “community of artists.” Learning is structured to develop skills and creativity through a range of artistic experiences, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printing and textiles. Pupils explore, experiment and refine their techniques while developing their own ideas and personal expression.

Our curriculum is organised on a two-year rolling programme to ensure progression and full coverage for all pupils. Each unit combines a strong focus on developing key artistic skills with the study of a significant artist, allowing children to learn from a diverse range of styles, cultures and traditions. Through this, pupils build confidence, knowledge and understanding, applying their skills to create thoughtful and imaginative artwork.

Learning is inclusive and carefully differentiated so that all children can participate fully and achieve success. Art and Design is celebrated across the school through engaging displays, enrichment opportunities and the sharing of pupils’ work, helping children to value creativity as an important part of their education and future lives.

Our Core Aim for all Pupils

Our core aim is to nurture creative, confident and reflective artists who can express themselves with imagination and skill. We encourage pupils to develop their ability to observe, experiment and evaluate their work, using appropriate artistic vocabulary to discuss their ideas and progress.

Rooted in our Catholic values, we aim to inspire children to appreciate the beauty of God’s creation and to express their own unique gifts through art. Pupils are encouraged to work thoughtfully and respectfully, valuing their own work and that of others. Through studying influential artists, they develop an understanding of how art can communicate meaning, reflect culture and contribute to the wider community.
