Music Vision 2025/26

Our Approach to Teaching Music

Music is taught across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 using the Charanga scheme, which is aligned with the National Curriculum and Model Music Curriculum. Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure progression in knowledge and skills, enabling pupils to develop as musicians over time.

Pupils learn through singing, listening, composing and performing, while developing an understanding of the inter-related dimensions of music, including pulse, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture and structure. Music is taught as a practical and creative subject, where each class becomes a community of musicians.

Singing is central to our music provision. Pupils sing regularly in lessons, collective worship and weekly singing assemblies led by specialist musicians. Performance opportunities are embedded throughout the school year, including liturgies, productions and community events, giving pupils a sense of purpose and audience.

Additional to our curriculum, pupils also have opportunities to learn instruments, including whole-class ensemble brass teaching in Key Stage 2, alongside access to peripatetic music lessons. Our strong links with local organisations and the wider community enrich pupils’ musical experiences and expose them to a wide range of musical styles and traditions.

Our Core Aim for Pupils

Our core aim is for pupils to develop confidence, creativity and a lifelong love of music.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will be able to perform, compose and listen with increasing accuracy, fluency and expression. They will understand key musical concepts, use appropriate vocabulary and appreciate a range of musical styles and traditions.

We aim for pupils to leave St Catharine’s as confident performers and reflective listeners who value music as a form of expression, creativity and community, and who are well prepared to continue their musical journey beyond primary school.
