Maths Vision 2025/26

Our Approach to Teaching Mathematics

Mathematics is a core subject at St Catharine’s and underpins learning across the curriculum. We aim for all pupils to develop confidence, curiosity and a secure understanding of mathematical concepts.

We follow a mastery approach to teaching mathematics, informed by guidance from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and the NCETM. This approach ensures that all pupils develop a deep and secure understanding of key concepts through small, carefully sequenced steps. Teaching prioritises fluency, reasoning and problem solving, enabling pupils to make connections and apply their learning in a range of contexts.

Our curriculum is delivered through the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a clear progression of knowledge and skills from EYFS to Year 6. Lessons are structured to include modelling, guided practice and independent application, with a focus on mathematical talk and reasoning.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, pupils develop early number sense through the NCETM Mastering Number programme, building fluency and confidence with number. This strong foundation supports later mathematical understanding.

Across Year 2 – Year 6, pupils develop fluency in times tables through regular practice using Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS), ensuring rapid recall and application.

Concrete, pictorial and abstract representations are used to support understanding, and pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, identify patterns and make connections. Mathematics is taught as a connected subject, with opportunities to apply skills across the wider curriculum.

Our Core Aim for Pupils

Our core aim is for pupils to become fluent, confident and resilient mathematicians.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will:

  • have secure fluency in key mathematical facts and procedures
  • reason mathematically using clear explanations and appropriate vocabulary
  • solve problems by applying their knowledge to a range of contexts, including unfamiliar situations

We aim for pupils to leave St Catharine’s with a positive attitude towards mathematics, seeing themselves as capable learners who can apply their skills in everyday life and in future learning.
