Science Vision 2025/26

Our Approach to Teaching Science

At St Catharine’s School, science is taught as a core subject with regular, dedicated curriculum time and a strong emphasis on children learning as scientists. Teaching is carefully planned in line with the National Curriculum and is supported by knowledge organisers that ensure clear progression in knowledge, vocabulary and “working scientifically” skills. A diverse range of key scientists from different cultures is embedded throughout our curriculum to broaden pupils’ understanding and representation within science.

Lessons prioritise practical investigation and the five key types of scientific enquiry, with increasing opportunities for pupils to pose their own questions and design investigations as they progress through the school. Assessment is ongoing and purposeful, using questioning, observation, Explorify activities and Rising Stars assessments to inform teaching and provide effective feedback.

Science learning is further enriched through engaging displays, Living Labs, STEM assemblies, newsletters, Annual Science fairs, “Scientist of the Week” awards, visitors and off-site visits. Inclusive practice and effective differentiation ensure that all learners are supported and challenged appropriately.

Our Core Aim for All Pupils

Our core aim is for all children to develop a deep understanding of the world around them, underpinned by curiosity, wonder, stewardship and respect for creation. We want pupils to grow into confident, knowledgeable scientists who can think critically, use precise scientific vocabulary, apply mathematical skills, and understand the relevance of science within society, the environment and the future.

Ultimately, we aim to foster enquiring minds, responsible global citizens and a lifelong love of science, ensuring that children are well prepared for the next stage of their scientific education and beyond.
