PSHE and RHE Vision 2025 – 2026

Our Approach to PSHE and RHE

At St Catharine’s School, PSHE and RHE is central to our mission to develop valued individuals who are equipped to live healthy, fulfilled lives and contribute positively to God’s world. PSHE and RHE is taught through TenTen Resources, Life to the Full Plus scheme of Catholic PSHE and RSE, A spiral curriculum designed in line with the National Curriculum and adapted to include the 2025 DfE statutory guidance for Relationships Education and Health Education and informed by the PSHE and RHE Association Programme of Study.

Each class operates as a community of citizens, where children learn to respect themselves and others, recognise human dignity, and develop the skills needed to thrive academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Learning takes place in a safe, inclusive and respectful environment, where discussion, reflection and empathy are encouraged.

PSHE and RHE is delivered through discrete, planned lessons across the year, alongside opportunities for learning to be revisited and applied across the wider curriculum, particularly in Science, Computing and RE. The school follows the TenTen Diocesan-approved Relationships and Sex Education programme, supplemented by input from Gloucestershire Police’s School beat officer in upper Key Stage 2 and ensuring comprehensive coverage of wellbeing, online safety and healthy lifestyles. Content is taught through rolling programmes to ensure progression and age-appropriate learning.

Teaching is inclusive and responsive to need, with appropriate support and challenge for all learners, including pupils with SEND. Learning is enhanced through national initiatives, external visitors and real-life experiences. Assessment is ongoing and proportionate, using formative feedback, summative reporting and pupil voice to ensure the curriculum has a positive impact on wellbeing and personal development.

Core Aims for Teaching PSHE and RHE

Through our PSHE and RHE curriculum, we aim for all children to:

  • recognise their intrinsic value and human dignity, understanding that every person is unique and loved by God
  • apply the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, exploring vocation, service and how their talents can be used to help others
  • develop positive, respectful relationships, rooted in kindness, empathy, honesty and responsibility
  • understand how to care for their physical, mental and emotional health, including healthy lifestyles and emotional wellbeing
  • learn how to keep themselves safe, including online safety, managing risk and knowing when and how to seek help
  • develop resilience, confidence and a growth mindset, enabling them to overcome challenges and achieve their potential
  • gain age-appropriate understanding of changing bodies and life cycles, taught sensitively and in line with Catholic teaching
  • make informed and responsible choices, understanding the consequences of actions for themselves and others
  • demonstrate British Values, interpreted through a Catholic lens of welcome, respect, justice and community
  • transfer key life skills, attitudes and values learned through PSHE and RHE into the wider curriculum and everyday life
