Our Approach to Teaching PE
At St Catharine’s School, our Physical Education curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong love of sport by nurturing children as confident, healthy movers from an early age. Our learning is logically sequenced to ensure pupils build a foundation of core strength and co-ordination, moving from fundamental movement skills in their early years to complex tactical concepts in Key Stage 2.
Our curriculum ensures full coverage of the National Curriculum while prioritising the long-term development of every child. By focusing on both substantive knowledge—including nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices—and disciplinary skills like resilience and self-reflection, we prepare pupils to succeed in sport and life. We revisit core themes such as physical competence and personal wellbeing to ensure children make meaningful connections between their activity levels and their long-term health.
Our Core Aim for all Pupils
We prioritise inclusive teaching that allows every child to achieve, recognizing that primary school is the most vital window for establishing healthy habits that last into adulthood. Learning is enriched by a broad range of experiences, including cross country, floorball, swimming, dance, competitive fixtures, and local club links, fostering a sense of community and personal growth. Physical Education is celebrated across the school as an essential driver for mental and physical wellness, ensuring our children leave as physically active citizens ready for the next stage of their journey.
