The principles of Catholic Social Teaching underpin every aspect of life at St Catharine’s Primary School. Rooted in the example of St Catharine of Alexandria, we strive to live out the Gospel with courage, compassion and a deep sense of community. Our faith calls us to love God and to love our neighbour, especially those experiencing poverty, injustice or exclusion. Following Christ’s example, we aim to bring hope, peace and fairness to a world that is often fragile and divided.
Catholic Social Teaching is grounded in the life and words of Jesus Christ. Pope Francis reminded us that Catholic schools should help young people put their faith into loving, meaningful action—so that their faith not only shapes their own lives, but also transforms society for the better.
Guided by our virtues—Courage, Compassion and Community—we help children understand how to live their faith authentically and responsibly in today’s world.
The Themes of Catholic Social Teaching
The Themes of Catholic Social Teaching are:
Human Dignity
Every person is created in the image of God. All lives are precious, and every child at St Catharine’s is taught to respect and value the dignity of others in all that they say and do.
Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
We are called to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. Our school encourages children to notice those in need and respond with kindness, service and compassion, living out Christ’s call to care for the marginalised.
Participation
Every child is encouraged to take an active role in school life. From classroom discussions and assemblies to liturgies and charitable projects, pupils learn that their voice and actions can make a difference.
Rights and Responsibilities
Every person has fundamental rights, including food, education, healthcare and shelter. Children at St Catharine’s are taught that these rights come with responsibilities—to respect others’ rights and contribute positively to their community.
Solidarity
We are all part of God’s family. Children learn that what happens to one person affects everyone, locally, nationally and globally. Through service, awareness projects and acts of kindness, we build a culture of unity and support.
Stewardship of Creation
God has entrusted the world to us. Pupils are encouraged to care for creation through eco-projects, outdoor learning and everyday acts of responsibility, so that future generations can enjoy and benefit from the world we share.
Subsidiarity
Decisions should be made as closely as possible to those affected by them. At St Catharine’s, children learn to take responsibility for themselves, support each other, and understand that everyone has a role to play in solving problems fairly and thoughtfully.
The Common Good
Our community works together to ensure that all members can thrive. Children are taught to consider the wellbeing of others, to act with justice, and to contribute to a school and world that is fair, peaceful and welcoming for everyone.
