Virtues & Mission

Our Mission and Virtues

At St Catharine’s Primary School, our vision is shaped by the life and witness of St Catharine of Alexandria – a saint known for her deep faith, wisdom and extraordinary courage. Her example inspires us to be learners who seek truth, uphold justice and treat every person with dignity and kindness.

(Taken from the window of our church)

Our mission expresses this:

St Catharine’s Primary School provides an inclusive Catholic education, expressing love of and trust in Jesus. We empower individuals to “Let Their Light Shine” (Matthew 5:16) through courage, compassion and community.

We believe that every child is created in the image of God and has unique gifts to offer the world. In line with Catholic Social Teaching, we place the dignity of the human person, the call to community, and our responsibility to care for one another at the heart of school life. Through prayer, learning and service, we help our pupils grow into thoughtful, confident and loving individuals who can make a positive difference to society.

Our Virtues

Developed with pupils, parents, staff, governors and our parish family, our three virtues represent the kind of people we want our children to become, both now and in the future. These virtues guide our relationships, our behaviour and the way we approach learning every day.

Courage

Following the example of St Catharine – who stood bravely for her beliefs – we help children to face challenges with confidence, honesty and resilience. Courage allows pupils to take responsible risks, try new ideas and stand up for what is right.
This reflects the CST principles of Human Dignity and Solidarity, encouraging children to act with integrity and support others with strength and purpose.

“Be strong and courageous… for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9

Compassion

Compassion teaches us to understand, forgive and care deeply for one another. Inspired by Christ’s unconditional love, we nurture empathy in every child, helping them to notice others’ needs and respond with kindness.
This aligns closely with CST principles such as the Option for the Poor and Vulnerable and the Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers, reminding us to look outward and serve others.

“Be kind and compassionate to one another…” – Ephesians 4:32

Community

St Paul’s teaching reminds us that we are one body in Christ, each with a unique part to play. Our school celebrates this by encouraging belonging, cooperation and responsibility. Community helps our pupils recognise their role in building a fair, inclusive and joyful school.
This is rooted in CST’s Call to Family, Community and Participation, showing that we grow stronger when we work together and value every voice.

“The body is one and has many members… so it is with Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 12:12
